In one week, I have grown more as a person than I could have ever imagined. Taking on the responsibility of being independent, such as navigating the city, balancing conference stress, and making sure I stayed on top of my academics at home, I have gained more maturity, and it gave me a snapshot of how life will be in the future, with college as my next path. On top of this, the connections made in the conference helped me grow as a person as I was meeting and interacting with cultures from around the world.
While yes, research and confidence is the base of success, the skills of having fellow delegates trust me is what truly helped me excel. I made sure I wasn’t just a robotic delegate, going through the motions of moderated caucus and unmoderated caucus, and instead creating friendships, not just alliances. Towards the end of the conference, I had countries sending me notes and relaying their regards, hoping I would receive awards. In the end, I did accomplish the goals of receiving “physical” awards, receiving the title of rapporteur and Plenary Speaker, which gave me the chance to speak on a stage and screen to 4,000+ people. But I also accomplished enjoying my time and truly having fun within debate. My partner and I got creative with our speeches, always having creative hooks to captivate the audience and chairs, and within the breaks of committee, we accomplished a strong partnership, being able to have good structure of off-the-cuff speaking, as well as a strong plan within committee when it comes down to unmod, by splitting up to collect more countries’ participation.
Thank you for your generous donations to assist me in the funding process to attend a conference in the class I am most passionate about, and thank you for believing in me. I remember getting the email, and I began crying because I knew how much of an impact it would leave on my family and me. I was in the car when I told my mom, and she went quiet and teared up, just saying thank you. She exclaimed how much stress was relieved because she was going to have to budget in order to help me go to the conference, and it was one less thing on her bucket list of tasks she already has.
